Summary

The Full-Time Preschool Chef is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals and snacks for children in accordance with approved menus, nutrition guidelines, and all applicable health, safety, and sanitation regulations. This role ensures that food service operations run efficiently each day, supporting the overall health, growth, and well-being of children in the center. The Preschool Chef maintains accurate meal records, manages kitchen inventory and food supplies, and ensures compliance with all childcare licensing, health department, and food program requirements.


The Full-Time Preschool Chef plays a vital role in daily center operations by ensuring meals are prepared on time, the kitchen remains clean and organized, and children with allergies or special dietary needs are safely accommodated. This position requires reliability, strong time management, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy food service environment for children and staff.

Duties

Meal Preparation and Service

  • Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily according to the approved menu and scheduled meal times.
  • Ensure meals are prepared in appropriate portions based on age groups and licensing requirements.
  • Follow all nutrition guidelines and accommodate food allergies, dietary restrictions, and special meal plans as directed.
  • Ensure meals are served on time to support classroom schedules and daily routines.

Kitchen Operations and Sanitation

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen environment at all times.
  • Follow proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures in compliance with health department and licensing regulations.
  • Wash, sanitize, and properly store dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment after each use.
  • Monitor refrigerator and freezer temperatures daily and document readings as required.
  • Ensure kitchen equipment is used safely and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.

Food Program Compliance and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate daily meal counts and required food service documentation.
  • Follow all guidelines for meal service and recordkeeping in accordance with applicable food and nutrition program requirements.
  • Ensure menus are posted as required and meals served match the approved menu.
  • Maintain records for food deliveries, inventory, and production as required by center policy.

Inventory and Supply Management

  • Monitor food and kitchen supply inventory and notify administration when items need to be ordered.
  • Receive and properly store food deliveries following safe food handling procedures.
  • Rotate food using first-in, first-out (FIFO) methods to ensure freshness and reduce waste.
  • Maintain organized storage areas for food and supplies.

Health, Safety, and Team Collaboration

  • Follow all center health and safety procedures, including proper handwashing and sanitation practices.
  • Communicate effectively with administration regarding menu changes, shortages, equipment issues, or safety concerns.
  • Support substitute kitchen staff or assistants when assigned.
  • Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and inspections as needed.
  • Maintain professionalism and a positive attitude while working in a childcare environment.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in food service, school nutrition, childcare, or institutional kitchen settings preferred.
  • Experience preparing meals for groups of children is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and kitchen operations required.
  • Experience working in a licensed childcare center or similar regulated environment preferred.

Licensing, Certifications, and Compliance

  • Must be able to pass all required background checks in accordance with state childcare licensing regulations.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current food safety or food handler certification (or obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Must complete required health and safety training as required by state and local regulations.
  • Must comply with all applicable licensing, health department, and center policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds (food boxes, milk crates, supplies).
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and move safely within a kitchen environment.
  • Ability to work in typical kitchen conditions, including heat and cold environments.
