Summary

This full-time, year-round position is a key position in our NAYEC accredited facility that entails direct program curriculum development and implementation within the Doris Muller Preschool as Head Teacher. Under the supervision of the Education Director, the Preschool Head Teacher must be committed to maintaining a nurturing and safe environment, and to working collaboratively to develop and implement curriculum in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the CT Office of Early Childhood and The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and with consideration of all classifications of: learners; ages; abilities; developmental stages; and family needs.

Essential Functions

Duties

Program Development

  • Maintain a team philosophy promoting and embracing the FISH Philosophy.
  • Following the guidelines set forth by the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and the State of CT, Office of Early Childhood; consistently identify and employ best practices in curriculum development and implementation for children from 3 – 5 years of age.
  • Maintain the Doris Muller Preschool’s NAEYC Classroom Portfolio and make certain that the portfolio remains in compliance at all times.
  • Complete any other duties as assigned by the Education Director.

Safety and Security

  • Establish a setting that ensures the health and safety of all children, helping keep a workspace that is clean and safe by maintaining the Weekly Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting Checklist in accordance with Standard Five of NAEYC.
  • Help keep accurate attendance forms for children in the program.
  • Assure that children are signed in and out by parent/guardian, checking IDs of pick-up people.
  • Report all incidents and problems to the Education Director, and properly execute accident and incident reports.
  • Ensure that all COVID-19 protocols, procedures, and policies are followed at all times.

Supervision and Implementation of Program Activities

  • Maintain the preschool classroom bulletin boards, supplies, and overall design of the classroom, to maximize curriculum effectiveness.
  • Be aware of adult to child ratios and where all children are at all times.
  • Assure that any written communication with parents is approved by the Education Director.

In addition to the above, the following competencies and skills are necessary to perform

this job successfully:

  • Possess a valid state driver’s license with own transportation and have ability to acquire a Public Passenger Endorsement on license to drive the COMO van and transport children.
  • Attend and contribute to all scheduled staff meetings.
  • Complete a minimum of 20 hours of professional development per year.
  • Obtain CPR, First Aid, and Medication Administration Certifications; including Epi-pen administration.
  • Participate in special programs and/or events (i.e. Family Nights, field trips, parent workshops, organization-wide activities, Village Fair, COMO Annual Gala, etc.) as assigned by the Education Director.
  • Must dress appropriately for the work place to promote a consistently professional image with expected frequent public contact.
  • Proficiency with the use of a computer including Microsoft office word, excel, Power Point, Publisher, as well as credit card machines.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills, with attention to detail in all writing.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Holds a Designated Head Teacher License from the State of CT Office of Early Childhood for preschool through school-age.
  • Have a current physical, no more than one year old; obtain a TB test.
  • Submit to fingerprinting for a background check.
  • Demonstrate ability to physically work with children in a variety of setting including indoors (on the floor, at tables) and outdoors (playground, walks) and lift up to 25 lbs.

Education

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or early childhood special education.

Experience

A minimum of two years’ work experience in curriculum development and implementation in a classroom setting.
