First Roots Underhill Support Teacher reports to the Program Director and is responsible for the care and supervision of children ages 6 weeks to 3 years during break times and curriculum planning time for classroom teachers throughout the day. The support teacher prepares snacks, meals, bottles, materials for activities, and ensures that all children are included, engaged, safe, and happy. The support teacher serves as a positive role model for all children and upholds the mission of First Roots.

We are a 5 STAR, nature focused early care and education program that views each child as an individual with a unique developmental profile. Through developmentally responsive outdoor programming, we serve children ages 6 weeks to 8 years. This position requires flexibility from the employee, as various classes will need coverage for their lunches and curriculum planning time. Duties will vary, and include the following under the direction of the Classroom Teacher and/or Director:

  • Interacting with children in a nurturing and respectful manner in the classroom and on the playground.
  • Tending to diapering, toileting, feeding and dressing needs of the children.
  • Assisting Teacher with light cleaning duties such as sweeping, washing dishes, cleaning down counters, and taking out trash/recycling at end of the day.
  • Assisting Teachers with getting children down for rest time (getting mats out, rubbing backs, etc)
  • Helping with project preparations, managing resource room, and/or general program-wide needs.
  • Miscellaneous school-wide tasks as needed (organizing fundraiser and community event materials, library upkeep and organization, etc.)


  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Excellent rapport with young children, a sense of humor and an authentic disposition toward helping children learn through play and hands on activities.
  • Display a nurturing, compassionate and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Flexibility and the ability to manage different schedules.
  • Be punctual and prepared.
  • Have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Have own transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor degree, with concentration in psychology, early childhood education, physical education or visual arts.
  • Minimum 2 years (+) experience caring for children (age birth-5 years) in home or center based settings.
