Summary
The Substitute is temporarily responsible for the care and education of a group of children they have been assigned to for their shift. The Substitute will implement and support the daily plans and schedule as they are instructed by the classroom teacher. The substitute will defer all questions from parents concerning the care of their children or the program to the primary classroom teacher.
Duties
Responsibilities
- Implements and facilitates developmentally appropriate activities as planned by the lead teacher
- Ensures that children are adequately supervised
- Promotes critical thinking and problem solving
- Acts without bias and projects sensitivity towards cultural diversity
- Promotes independence, cooperation and positive self-esteem and self-concept
- Provides nurturing attention and uses positive approaches to guide behavior
- Follows proper procedures for diapering, dispensing of medications and universal precautions
- Encourages children to use proper hygiene
- Arrives on time and is prepared to manage the children
- Checks in with the Director to find out where they are needed for the day
Administrative
- Observes and records the happenings with children
- Keeps the classroom teacher and executive director informed of issues and events pertaining to the program and/or children
- Keeps track of the children's attendance
- Assures that the center is kept neat and clean
- Enforces health policies
- Completes proper forms and reports as necessary and timely
Communication
- Provides parents with information about their child's experience for the day
- Treats parents with respect
- Shares material and ideas with staff
- Listens to feedback from colleagues at MMCC
- Follows appropriate procedures and protocol for grievances with parents, colleagues, and supervisors.
Professionalism
- Completes all required orientation training and CPR and First Aid Certification
- Maintains an ethical and professional manner with children, colleagues and parents
- Supports MMCC philosophies and policies
- Respect the confidentiality of children, families and colleagues
- Respect cultural, economic, gender, sexual orientation and other differences
- Is aware of and maintains their role as a MANDATED REPORTER of child abuse and neglect
- Completes the orientation process as laid out by MMCC
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 18 years of age, and is a high school graduate or has completed a GED
- Is able to comprehend basis written format
- 3 Credit College Course in Early Childhood Education or Child Development OR
- Fundamentals for Early Childhood Educators
- One year of experience working with young children
- Ability to relate well with children
- Excellent written and verbal skills
