Summary

The Substitute Teacher works on-call assignments, short and long-term assignments, as well as seasonal roles to support our in-person, classroom-based Early Childhood Programs. The role of the substitute teacher is varied, and requires flexibility, cooperation and collaboration. This role assists the teacher with curriculum, classroom cleanliness, and meal service. This position requires a deep respect for children, strong classroom management skills, and experience working with diverse populations, including children with special needs. This person must adhere to Campagna Center Policies and Early Childhood Programs Policies, which are guided by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Standards, Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Licensing Standards and the Head Start Performance Standards.


This position is a 10-Month position with a schedule from mid-August to late-June.

Duties

Assists the classroom teacher in planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate classroom experience for children between the ages of three and five.

  •        Maintains a safe and healthy learning environment within the classroom.
  •        Builds positive self-esteem by speaking to the children in a respectful tone.
  •        Make positive statements to the children about themselves on a regular basis.
  •        Treats all children with dignity and respect and allows for individual differences.
  •        Implements, with the teacher, the curriculum using developmentally appropriate practice.
  •        Assists with weekly nutrition activities.
  •        Administers emergency First Aid when necessary or as required.
  •       Eats with the children the same food that they are served. Sits at the table and interacts with children during mealtime. Helps the children serve food family style.
  •        Assists in preparing activities.
  •        Keep equipment and materials clean and in good condition at all times.

Works with teacher to provide parents opportunities to participate in their child's education.

  •        Makes required home visits and parent conferences (long term substitutes only).
  •        Encourages and schedules parents to participate in planning and evaluating classroom activities.

 

Adheres to all Head Start Performance Standards, Licensing and NAEYC Standards in performance of duties.

  •       Participates in all activities planned for children.
  •       Is familiar with and adheres to the program standards.
  •       Documents suspected child abuse immediately. Documents reporting of suspected child abuse within 24 hours to Child Protective Services.
  •       Works with all staff to ensure program compliance.
  •       Completes and submits timesheets for approval in a timely manner.

 

All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  •        A high school diploma is required and a CDA or its equivalency is preferred. 
  •        At least two years' experience working with children in an accredited child development programs preferred.  
  •        Should have good oral and writing skills and must be willing to participate in cross-cultural training.
  •        Candidate should obtain First Aid and CPR Certification within 90 days of employment.
  •        Head Start parents will be considered for this position
  •        Ability to sit on floor, bend, reach and lift children up to 40 lbs.


Salary : $14/Hr
