Ideal candidate:

We seek a toddler and preschool assistant teacher who, under the direction of the lead teacher, will deliver a high-quality educational experience for the children and families under his/her care, including meeting the educational, safety, hygiene, nutrition, and nurturing needs of the children and utilizing the appropriate treatment and discipline procedures outlined in the personnel policy manual.

Our ideal candidate has a CDA with a minimum of two years of experience in a licensed childcare center. Our ideal candidate is passionate about our mission, passionate about serving children facing homelessness and dedicated to empathetic and inclusive practices. Strong candidates have experience and a successful track record with DECAL/Bright from the Start rules and regulations and are experienced with NAEYC and Quality Rated renewal processes.

*The average rate of pay for this position is approximately $15 per hour.*


The Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher in meeting the educational, safety, hygiene, nutrition, and nurturing needs of children, including ensuring the development and safety of these children in accordance with relevant federal, territorial, and municipal legislation and policies. This position is under the supervision of the Early Childhood Education Director.

  • Works closely with the Teacher assuming responsibility for the daily program of activities and experiences, including carrying out weekly lesson plans, room themes, and educational decor.
  • Provides instruction that encourages or supports intellectual growth.
  • Shares with other staff housekeeping and rotational duties, including nap supervision.
  • Nurtures, listens to and disciplines (teaching appropriate behavior) the children.
  • Attends and completes a minimum of 18 hours of annual training, workshops, seminars, and/or conferences related to Early Childhood Development/Education within a calendar year. (This does not include required CPR/First Aid Training).
  • Assists in determining supplies and equipment needed for the classroom.
  • Interacts with children in activities being supervised.
  • Actively participates with children during outdoor play.
  • Assists with children's assessments and provides daily feedback to the Lead Teacher, Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant ECE Director, and ECE Director.
  • Works cooperatively in a team approach with other staff, volunteers, and parents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher and ECE leadership team.


  • Education: High School Diploma required
  • Training and Experience: CDA certificate or AA degree preferred; minimum of 2 years experience in an infant/toddler/preschool setting.
  • Other: Care and concern for children; must be flexible and able to relate to the needs of homeless children; understanding of child growth and development; ability to accept and work with low-income, multi-problem families.
  • SALARY: Paid at a competitive hourly rate based on level of education and years of experience.
