Join OU’s Early Childhood Program as an Assistant Teacher at the Institute of Child Development Lab School

The Institute of Child Development at the University of Oklahoma is seeking dedicated, warm, and collaborative Early Childhood Assistant Teachers to join our University Laboratory School serving children ages 1 through 5 years.

The ICD operates as a Reggio‑inspired lab school with three core goals:

  1. Mentorship & Teacher Preparation: Provide a high‑quality learning environment where undergraduate and graduate students observe, learn, and practice in real classrooms.
  2. High‑Quality Care & Family Engagement: Offer families responsive, relationship‑based care and education rooted in developmentally appropriate practice.
  3. Research & Educational Innovation: Support research activities, host visitors and study tours, and make learning visible through documentation.

 

Assistant Teachers are essential partners in creating joyful, intentional learning environments and supporting Lead Teachers in daily teaching, documentation, and the mentoring of practicum students.

Teachers receive a yearly salary (with 9-month or 12-month payment options) and OU benefits.

Duties

Job Responsibilities

Assistant Teachers at the ICD are responsible for, but not limited to:

Classroom Support & Teaching

  • Teaching full‑day in the classroom.
  • Creating a safe, nurturing, developmentally appropriate learning environment.
  • Assisting the Lead Teacher with:
  • Planning learning experiences
  • Preparing the environment and materials
  • Facilitating daily activities
  • Documenting children’s learning
  • Supporting research‑aligned classroom practices
  • Maintaining organization and cleanliness
  • Leading the classroom in the Lead Teacher’s absence.
  • Supporting children with toileting, diapering, feeding, and self‑help skill development.

Family & Community Collaboration

  • Building positive, professional relationships with families.
  • Communicating regularly with parents about children’s experiences.

Mentorship & Lab School Responsibilities

  • Supporting practicum students and visitors as part of a mentoring team.
  • Participating in the documentation of children’s learning and inquiry.
  • Assisting with research inquiries consistent with a university lab environment.

Professional Expectations

  • Maintaining up-to-date CPR/First Aid, required DHS training hours, and yearly OU OnPoint training.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with DHS and university standards.
  • Modeling professionalism, reflective practice, and openness to coaching.
  • Participating in monthly after‑hours staff meetings and additional school events as appropriate.

Requirements

Required Education

  • CDA, CCCP, or Associate’s degree (preferably in Early Childhood Education or Child Development)
  • With preference given to those showing a commitment to pursuing or actively work toward a Bachelor’s degree in ECE, Child Development, or a related field if not already obtained.

Physical Requirements

Assistant Teachers must be able to:

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Bend, kneel, sit on the floor, and transition easily between positions.

Nice To Haves

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children ages 1–5 in an early childhood or lab‑school setting.
  • Knowledge of early childhood standards, child development theories, and play‑based practice.
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a teaching team.
  • Interest in Reggio Emilia‑inspired practice, documentation, or research.
