Summary
White Barn Children’s Centre is seeking a warm, dependable Teaching Assistant to support our nature-based preschool program for children ages 3–6. Our school emphasizes outdoor exploration, play-based learning, and nurturing children’s natural curiosity in all seasons.
We are looking for someone collaborative, enthusiastic about nature, and committed to supporting lead Nature Educators in creating a joyful, safe, and engaging learning environment.
Duties
Child Support & Outdoor Learning
- Assist lead teachers in guiding nature-based, play-centered activities outdoors year-round.
- Support children’s independence, social-emotional development, and problem-solving skills.
- Help supervise children in outdoor and indoor environments to ensure safety, engagement, and positive interactions.
Classroom & Program Support
- Prepare materials and help maintain organized, inviting learning spaces.
- Assist with setup/cleanup of daily activities, outdoor environments, and classroom routines.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and required professional development.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain warm, friendly interactions with children and families.
- Route all family communication through the Lead Nature Educator; the TA does not handle primary family communication.
- Support observational notes or documentation at the direction of lead teachers.
- Complete basic organizational and administrative tasks as requested.
Safety
- Follow all supervision, health, and safety policies to ensure children's well-being.
- Model safe outdoor practices and support risk-aware exploration.
Requirements
Experience
- At least 1 year of experience working with young children in a classroom, childcare, camp, or outdoor setting.
- Nature-based or outdoor program experience is a plus but not required.
Skills
- Team-oriented, reliable, and eager to learn.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons.
- Passion for early childhood development and nature-based learning.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather.
- Able to walk on uneven terrain and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Must pass required background checks and employment authorization verification.
Nice To Haves
High school diploma required; coursework or a degree in Early Childhood Education, Environmental Studies, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
