Project Description:
Community Day Center for Children, on behalf of Trees and People Coalition, is seeking an independent contractor to serve as Project Manager for the Trees for Seattle’s Future project. The overall goals of the project are to:
● Raise awareness of and promote action for Seattle’s tree canopy
● Strengthen family and community bonds and connection with nature in an urban setting.
We plan to do this by:
● Developing materials to provide experiential education for young children and their families about urban trees, including:
o A two-week early childhood education curriculum
o Online learning materials for families and independent/informal caregivers to use with young children
● Providing ample opportunities for early childhood educators and community members in communities affected by environmental and tree canopy inequities to be involved in the development, testing, and
dissemination of these materials
● Ensuring that trainings and community gatherings are accessible physically, culturally, and by language
● Training educators and guide families and communities in using the curriculum and materials
● Disseminating project materials widely as open-source documents
Project Background & Overview: Trees and People Coalition (TPC) is a Washington State nonprofit organization. Our mission is “to educate and engage all people to grow and protect urban trees for the benefit of all Seattle communities.” Through the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), we were approved for a Community Forestry Assistance Grant in 2024. This grant is to fund the two-and-a-half-year community engagement and education project described above. The grant project will be conducted in partnership with and administered by our fiscal sponsor, the Seattle Parks Foundation (SPF).
During the current climate emergency, trees are essential urban allies to moderate heat islands, filter pollution and wildfire smoke, and manage stormwater runoff. They have many other benefits for Seattle residents, including increasing physical, mental, and emotional health and providing habitat for birds, insects, and animals. However, Seattle’s tree canopy is decreasing; the most rapid rate of decrease is happening in environmental justice areas which have a lower percentage of tree canopy in the first place. This project will focus most on communities in those areas, and, with wide dissemination, it will benefit all communities.
Project Coordinator Role and Responsibilities:
The Project Manager will oversee project implementation and budget, working closely with the TPC Project Coordinator and Consultant and in coordination with SPF and DNR. Specifically, the Project Manager will:
● Play a lead role in developing and monitoring the project workplan, timeline, and budget and updating them as needed
● Serve as the liaison between Trees and People Coalition and the Seattle Parks Foundation
● Communicate with Trees and People Coalition, other organizations, and the public about the project, in partnership with the Project Coordinator and Project Consultant
● In partnership with the Project Coordinator, provide coordination and oversight as needed of contractors and subcontractors
● Coordinate volunteers from Trees and People Coalition who are helping with project activities
● Assist with submission of invoices to Seattle Parks Foundation in a timely way using proper procedures
● Assist with logistical and other details as needed to ensure that project activities happen as planned
Timeline and Effort: We anticipate the contract to require 8 hours/week from approximately March 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028. There will be some variation in weekly effort corresponding to peak periods in project phases.
