Early Childhood- Bus Driver

Summary

The School Bus Driver safely transports students to and from school, field trips, and approved activities while maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and student care. Drivers follow all federal and Virginia state regulations, as well as division policies, to ensure reliable and secure transportation services.

Duties

• Operate a school bus along assigned routes, maintaining safe driving practices at all times.

• Conduct required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of the bus.

• Maintain student safety through proper supervision, positive communication, and adherence to school policies.

• Keep accurate records, including mileage, attendance, and incident reports.

• Communicate professionally with parents, school staff, and administrators.

• Follow all federal and state laws, including Virginia Department of Education and DMV regulations.

• Respond appropriately to emergencies, mechanical issues, or unexpected route changes.

• Participate in required annual training and professional development.

Requirements

• Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and ethical conduct at all times.
• Work collaboratively with transportation staff, school personnel, and families.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow all division policies and procedures
• Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsements.
• Must pass required alcohol and controlled substance testing in compliance with federal law.
• Must pass a school bus driver physical exam as prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education.
• Must have a clean driving record meeting Virginia DMV standards (no DUI, certain violations, or felony convictions within specified timeframes).
• Must pass criminal background and child‑abuse checks.
• Must be at least 21 years old.

Nice To Haves

• Minimum of 1-2 years of professional child care experience.
• CPR and First Aid certification.
