Summary

The Assistant Teacher supports the Head Teacher in creating a nurturing, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for young children. This role helps implement play‑based curriculum, supports daily routines, and builds positive relationships with children and families. The Assistant Teacher models professionalism, teamwork, and ethical conduct consistent with NAEYC standards.

Duties

1. Support Curriculum & Learning Experiences (NAEYC Standards 1 & 5)

  • Assist in preparing and implementing developmentally appropriate, play‑based activities.
  • Engage with children during learning centers, outdoor play, and group experiences.
  • Help adapt materials and activities to meet individual developmental needs.
  • Encourage exploration, creativity, and problem‑solving.

2. Build Positive Relationships (NAEYC Standard 4)

  • Interact with children in warm, responsive, and respectful ways.
  • Support children’s social‑emotional development through positive guidance and co‑regulation.
  • Help create a classroom environment where every child feels safe, valued, and included.

3. Family & Community Engagement (NAEYC Standard 2)

  • Greet families warmly and support daily communication as directed by the Lead Teacher.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Participate in parent teacher conferences, family events and program activities as needed.

4. Observation & Documentation (NAEYC Standard 3)

  • Assist with observing children’s play, interactions, and developmental progress.
  • Share observations with the Lead Teacher to support planning and assessment.
  • Help maintain organized, accurate classroom documentation systems.

5. Health, Safety & Classroom Care (NAEYC Standard 6)

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment.
  • Support daily routines such as meals, toileting/diapering, rest time, and transitions.
  • Follow all licensing regulations, health guidelines, and program policies.
  • Ensure active supervision and promote children’s well‑being at all times.

6. Professionalism & Team Collaboration (NAEYC Standard 6 & Code of Ethics)

  • Demonstrate reliability, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Teacher and colleagues to support a cohesive classroom team.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and reflective practice.
  • Complete educational course (20 hours a year) and required certification ( CPR. First Aid, Epi Pen and Medication)
  • Uphold ethical conduct, confidentiality, and respect for diversity.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (CDA/ECE coursework preferred).
  • At least one year experience working with young children in a group setting.
  • Knowledge of child development and willingness to learn NAEYC standards & DAP.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice.

Nice To Haves

Experience:

  • Teaching: 2 year (Preferred)
  • Childcare: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Familiar with CT-ELDS

License/Certification:


  • Associate degree in ECE (preferred)
  • Child Development Associate Certification (required)
