Summary

The Summer Float is responsible for filling in for a teacher who is absent from the classroom, or supporting the classrooms of the school as needed. Assignments may be short-term or long-term, including a month or more in the same classroom. The Summer Float works in tandem with the other classroom teachers to maintain the developmentally appropriate practices as established by the regular teaching team. 

Duties

Classroom Management

  • Upon arrival, check in with office or coverage spreadsheet for daily placement(s). This schedule may change throughout the day, as needed to facilitate the program.
  • When in a classroom, establish and maintain a safe, clean and enriching environment. Follow routines for the classroom. Help children understand and carry out the rules of the classroom and the school.
  • When not supporting a specific classroom, check on all rooms regularly for bathroom breaks, extra support, or extra enrichment as needed. All classrooms should be checked on regularly and equally frequently. If all classroom needs are met, building support projects such as laundry, dishes, or other building support projects are available. If all building needs are met, and all classroom needs are met, special projects may be available from the office.
  • Be aware of and accommodate the individual health needs and allergies of the children in assigned classroom(s).

Curriculum

  • Support teachers in developing curriculum around the needs and interests of the children, following the Reggio Emilia-inspired values and practices of PSA. This may include daily provocations, short and long term projects, and more.
  • Reflect and share your observations and experiences with the teaching team. If necessary, provide written feedback.

Family Relations

  • Establish respectful and welcoming relationships with parents and caregivers. Communicate with families as needed about their child’s day. 
  • As needed, help teaching team(s) create weekly documentation by sharing photos, thoughts, and reflections from time in classroom.

School Expectations

  • Use appropriate interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Work effectively as a team member. Demonstrate respect towards other staff and the ability to foster an environment of mutual trust and collaboration with all staff. Provide guidance to new staff members.
  • Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual in the community (children, families and colleagues). Respect the privacy of students, families, and colleagues by maintaining confidentiality. 
  • Attend designated meetings such as reflective practice, staff meetings and Study Groups.
  • Keep up with daily school and family communication (email and Procare). Work with computer programs such as Google Suite, Procare and others as needed.
  • Dress appropriately, including to go outside. 
  • Uphold licensing and accreditation standards. Participate in biennial accreditation process. Follow school guidelines.
  • Learn about, understand, and implement a Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum. Learn about, understand, and implement an anti-bias curriculum.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age, with a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Successful completion of state required background checks and health screening, as required by licensing.

Nice To Haves

Experience with children preferred, but not required. This is a temporary position with the potential to turn into a permanent role for the right candidate. Students and those interested in exploring Early Childhood for the first time are encouraged to apply! This is a wonderful chance to gain some experience in a well-established program.
