Summary

The Teacher ensures the health, safety, and quality of education for children within the preschool’s care by collaborating with the administrative team and other staff to ensure daily curriculum and classroom activities are properly planned and delivered, and that the needs of the students, the goals of the preschool, and the Christian faith, vision and mission of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church are presented appropriately. The Teacher interacts positively with children, parents, and preschool administration, providing an environment of love and understanding for each child in his or her care, always exhibiting a positive attitude. The Teacher is directly supervised by the Director and works in partnership with the Director, Assistant Director, and Support Staff to meet long and short-term goals and affect the greatest positive outcome for St. Mark’s Preschool and its children and families.

Duties

Prepare and implement balanced and appropriate lesson plans and experiences for assigned class(es):

  • Operate all aspects of the program within regulatory and fiscal guidelines and in keeping with the policies of St. Mark’s Preschool
  • Prepare and submit to the Director a weekly and/or monthly calendar of engaging, play-based, child-centered curriculum and supportive activities in accordance with the Tennessee Early Learning Developmental Standards (TN-ELDS), including documentation of the TN-ELDS domain and standard of focus for that period.  
  • Consult regularly with the Director and request approval beforehand for any plans which deviate from the usual curriculum or require extra supplies or snacks
  • Guide children in a positive, loving fashion as they strive to gain self-control and appropriate behavior. Provide for the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth of each child in appropriate ways and in accordance with the philosophy of St. Mark’s Preschool.
  • Meaningfully engage with children to form nurturing and responsive relationships that foster joy in learning, encourage social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth, and provide opportunities to teach social-emotional strategies
  • Provide ongoing communication with parents individually and as a group including weekly and/or monthly calendar of lessons and supportive activities, upcoming special events, class contact roster, child behavior, etc., through email, social media, and daily contact.  Consult with the Director regarding any communications with parents of a sensitive or challenging nature.
  • Prepare and maintain classrooms, equipment, and supplies, including daily cleaning and storage of supplies as necessary.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and other St. Mark’s Preschool functions, which may include additional time outside of the class schedule.
  • Prepare and be available for parent conferences (required for age 3+) offered annually, in the fall and/or spring, interacting with parents honestly and tactfully.
  • Always supervise student safety, including sitting at the table during snack and lunch and intentionally positioning yourself throughout the day so you are always facing students, they are always in your line of sight, and no child is left unattended.

Specific Duties:

  • Request or alert the Director regarding any absences. Secure a qualified substitute for your absence and inform the substitute of necessary plans and information for classroom management. Inform the Director regarding any substitutes for recording on the calendar. Maintain written substitute guidelines with a copy kept in the classroom.
  • Record personal and student attendance on sign-in/out sheets and help maintain other necessary records and information (i.e. incident reports) for each child in classroom binder; Record any incidents of accidents, injuries, or other concerns as required. 
  • Lead by example; encourage teaching team success through modeling and coaching.
  • Plan individual and group age-appropriate activities to actively engage children and encourage social, cognitive and emotional growth.
  • Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Ensure all center policies and state regulations are met.
  • Ensure a healthy classroom environment – including maintaining appropriate hygiene and cleanliness standards and safety and security of children.
  • Supervise students and classroom volunteers to ensure they are following planned activities, hygiene and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate records, forms and files.
  • Maintain personal professional development plan to ensure continuous quality improvement.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional child care experience with preference of Associate's or higher degree in early childhood education or related field of study with a minimum of 30 Credits in ECE.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • High energy and the ability to work well with others (staff, children, and parents) and to foster a team environment.
  • A strong understanding of child development.
  • Infant/child CPR and First Aid certification (training available after hire).
  • Must clear full background check and must pass health screening.     
  • Obtain required in-service training hours annually from state-approved workshops, meetings, and online resources.
  • Follow the State of Tennessee Licensure Rules for Child Care Centers, the TN-ELDS, and the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment. Complete background checks and health screenings as required by the State.
  • Abide by all employment requirements as stated in the Licensure Rules, policies and procedures of St. Mark’s Preschool and reflect the quality and integrity of the school at all times.
  • Support, share, and reflect the Christian values of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Coordinate and implement educational curriculum by developing classroom activities based on developmentally appropriate practices and early learning standards.
  • Requirements include the ability to take frequent walks, use hands and fingers, handle objects, tools or controls, talk to and hear voices at many levels. May also be required to kneel, bend, squat or crawl.
  • A specific vision ability will be required including the ability to see up close and up to a certain distance, to see colors, have peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills as well as coachability and willingness to improve.
